However, of those who said they think their house is haunted, 56% said it was because they'd heard squeaking doors, 43% knocking radiators, 39% noisy pipes, 35% creaky floorboards and 21% strange draughts.
Apparently, 56% wait at least 6 months on average before getting the source of the noise looked into.
Suzanne Waddell, group marketing manager at Emo Oil, said: "As a nation we’re so keen to make our homes our havens, so it’s interesting to see how many of us will wait months before getting creaks and thumps that are spooking us, looked into. What’s even more interesting is that these noises are actually causing adults to feel anxious, so it’s even more worthwhile getting someone out to assess them.
"The majority of these noises are often a result of a non-serious issue which can be easily solved and so it’s far better to get these addressed sooner rather than later. In the instance that the repair is going to be a little more costly, then why not consider setting aside funds each month to cover repair work in the home.
"Not only will it help to prevent the issue from worsening but will also put Britons’ minds at rest and allow them to sleep a little easier."
Alternatively, buy a nice, contemporary, architect-designed house. Unlikely to feel spooked in one of those.
